Theatre Arts Class - Makeup Unit

The Theatre Arts Class ended their unit on makeup with face-painting. The students designed their own plan on a face-map that they had earlier created from their own portraits. The final results were quite dramatic as they discovered how much they could change their appearance with makeup effects.

Some of the final results after 90 minutes of applying makeup.

Start with a foundation.

Some great designs!

Chorale performance - Kielke Supper at Bethany Manor

Chorale had their debut performance at Bethany Manor in Saskatoon for the annual RJC Kielke & Sausage Supper on Tuesday, October 21, 2014.  The fundraiser is traditionally one of the first performances of each year. They sang two sets of 25 minutes each while the public enjoyed copious amounts of Kielke (home made noodles) and farmer's sausage prepared to perfection by the RJC kitchen!

Bethany Manor was paving their parking lot, so Mel
sat outside to offer alternatives.

Chorale also got to eat some of the fabulous food!

Chorale performed twice.

There were two dinner seatings at Bethany Manor - both well attended!

Fall Workshop with Choir and Saskatoon Youth Orchestra

The last weekend in September was set aside to give students a chance to join the RJC Workshop Choir and spend the entire weekend singing and learning great music. For over 20 years, the Saskatoon Youth Orchestra has been coming to RJC for the same weekend to kick start their season. The weekend always ends with a concert in the RJC Auditorium where both the choir and orchestra perform their own songs and collaborate for a few pieces together.

The SYO and RJC Choir "faceoff" each other at their first combined rehearsal for "Star Trek: Into Darkness."

Richard Carnegie conducts the combined groups in rehearsal.
A sort of "Movie Music" theme emerged through the weekend as the SYO (under the direction of Richard Carnegie, principal bassist of the Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra) performed a medley of tunes from "The Sound of Music." The RJC singers happily joined in for an impromptu singalong (since we performed Rogers & Hammerstein's classic play last June!) Among other pieces, the RJC Choir sang "Eatnemen Vuelie" which can be heard in the opening sequence of the Disney animated feature "Frozen."  Then together the choir & orchestra performed "When You Believe" (from "The Prince of Egypt") and "Star Trek: Into Darkness."

Under the pictures below you can find YouTube videos of the RJC pieces and the combined pieces. Or go to our YouTube Channel to see them there! youtube.com/rosthernjrcollege

At the Fall Concert, Chorale performed 3 pieces on their own.

Richard Janzen directed both groups in "When You Believe" from "The Prince of Egypt."

The two Richards take their bows with the SYO and RJC Choir looking on to an appreciated audience.

The concert is this coming Sunday at 2:30 pm and will feature works from the choir and orchestra workshop, including songs by the individual groups and a couple pieces combined.

Admission is by donation at the door. This is always a great concert to attend!

Friday Night Live! pictures and video

The performers of Friday Night Live played to a full gymnasium decked out in a western theme last week.  Our students outdid themselves again hosting youth and youth groups from the surrounding area and put on a great show!

Ryan Wiens started out the evening pumping up the crowd and introducing the MCs - Jake and Morgan.

"The Plimsoles" provided the first musical act rocking out "Sharp Dressed Man" by ZZ Top. Here guitarists Ahren and Terry lead the way.

Mackenzie and Ryan performed "Favourite Things" from "The Sound of Music".

Rachel brought her rendition of "Just You Wait!" (from "My Fair Lady") right off the stage and onto the floor among the crowd.

"The Chin Cowboys" sang "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" (Girls DC.)

Ryan energized the crowd with "Corner of the Sky" (from "Pippin")

Lyndsey hit it out of the park with her cover of "Falling for You" by Colbie Caillat.

Concert Choir took their turn with "One Voice" by The Wailin' Jennys.

A beautiful solo performance of Darius Rucker's "Wagon Wheel" by Alyssa.

Daniel brought down the house with his own unique cover of Weird Al's "White and Nerdy".

Dayna and Kenna performed two songs: Johnny Cash's "Ring of Fire" and "Bright Side" by The Stella Sisters.

The Plimsoles closed the evening with their cover of "Roxanne" by The Police with Ahren on lead guitar and vocals.

Gabby rockin' the bass.
